WHAT DOES SPRING & SUMMER MEAN FOR YOUR DOG

WHAT DOES SPRING AND SUMMER MEAN FOR MY DOG?

WHAT DOES SPRING AND SUMMER MEAN TO MY DOG?

As winter turns to spring and spring to summer your dogs coat will continuously change in preparation.

The longer days in spring will start to stimulate the pituitary gland which in turn will result in your dogs thick winter coat to start to shed ready for the new lighter summer coat grows in to replace it.

Longer and thicker coated breeds need to have the shedding winter coat removed daily by brushing and combing to  at home to prevent the old dead coat from packing around the newly growing  summer coat. Packed hair turns into matted fur really quickly! Matted fur iss erious. SEE article Do Mats Matter? Of all the times of the year to practise good home coat care, spring is the time.

Please remeber Spring = lambing season. Please walk your dog responsibly, where possible keep to footpaths and dogs on leads.

As forSummer, it may bring us lovely warm weather but what comes with it is a host of creepy crawlies that love our dogs! Did you know?
  • Fleas, Ticks and Worms can all be deterred by adding garlic to your dog’s diet?
  • Diatomaceous Earth rubbed through the fur will kill fleas and puffed into the crevices and corners of your home will kill their larvae
In the summer more and more pesticides are being sprayed on verges and in parks. Keep the hair in-between your dog’s toes and pads short to reduce the “sponge” effect and from your dog licking this when grooming.

A dog’s normal temperature is 100.5f to 101.5f when it reaches 108f a dog cannot be resuscitated. Thiscan happen in as little as 10 minutes in a parked car! SEE Heat Stroke articlebelow

If you cannot hold the back of your hand on the pavement for more than 7 seconds then the ground is too hot for your dogs paws!

Finally, remember your dog’s coat is its first line of defence from injury, parasites, insects, the sun and pollutants. Maintain your dogs coat and dont be tempted to have it cut too short – its a myth that you should have your dogs coat cut extra short during the hot weather unless your dog has a conditon that does not allow it to regulate its own heat.
